Spain Joins France in Banning Israeli Firms from Major Defense Expo

Israeli Firms

Spain has taken a significant step by barring Israeli companies from participating in the upcoming 2025 International Defence and Security Exhibition (FEINDEF), which will be held in Madrid.

This decision was announced by Defence Secretary Amparo Valcarce, who emphasized Spain’s commitment to promoting peace in Palestine and Lebanon, as well as adhering to international humanitarian law.

The exclusion of Israeli firms from FEINDEF is reportedly linked to the ongoing actions of Israel in the occupied Palestinian territories and Lebanon.

A specific incident highlighted in the statement involved an attack by Israeli soldiers on international delegates, including Spanish citizens, who were in the West Bank to assist Palestinians with olive harvesting.

Among those present during the incident were former Barcelona mayor Ada Colau and European Parliament member Jaume Asens, both of whom faced tear gas fired by Israeli forces.

FEINDEF is recognized as one of the world’s top ten defense fairs, expected to draw over 400 companies to Madrid from May 12 to 14, 2025. The Spanish government’s decision reflects a broader trend of international scrutiny towards Israel’s military actions, particularly in light of the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

This scrutiny has been underscored by recent threats from the United States regarding potential arms embargoes against Israel due to what some describe as a genocidal war in Gaza. However, the US has simultaneously supplied Israel with advanced military technologies, creating a complex and contradictory diplomatic landscape.

Spain’s decision to exclude Israeli firms follows a similar move by France, which initially banned seven Israeli companies from participating in the Euronaval arms show near Paris.

However, that ban was swiftly overturned by a French commercial court. This sequence of events highlights a growing diplomatic rift fueled by dissatisfaction with Israel’s conduct during its military campaigns in Gaza and Lebanon.

The French government’s attempts to restrict Israeli participation in defense exhibitions represent a notable shift in Europe’s approach to Israel amidst escalating tensions in the region.

Such actions indicate a growing willingness among European nations to confront Israeli military policy and advocate for human rights, particularly in relation to the Palestinian issue.

This evolving dynamic raises questions about future cooperation between Israel and European nations in defense and military sectors.

As the international community continues to monitor the situation, the repercussions of these decisions may significantly impact future defense relations and collaborations, not only between Israel and Spain or France but also with other European nations grappling with similar ethical dilemmas.
