Sheikh Hasina Reportedly Seeks Political Asylum in England

Political Asylum

On Monday, amidst escalating nationwide protests and intense pressure on her government, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and vacated the Prime Minister’s residence.

In the wake of these dramatic developments, reports indicate that Sheikh Hasina has sought political asylum in England, according to The Hindu.

This move comes as part of a broader response to the growing unrest in Bangladesh, where public dissent has reached unprecedented levels.

Sheikh Hasina’s sister, Sheikh Rehana, who was with her, is reportedly a British citizen.

This means she does not require political asylum, as her status allows her to remain in the UK without such measures.

Meanwhile, other reports suggest that Hasina’s plane made a stopover in India before heading to the UK.

According to India Today, Hasina’s aircraft landed at 5:36 local time at the Army’s Hindon Airbus facility in Ghaziabad.

She was met by India’s National Security Advisor, Ajit Doval, and other high-ranking military officials. From there, Hasina is expected to travel to London to seek refuge.

This dramatic exit comes amid one of the deadliest days of unrest in Bangladesh. The protests, which began over civil service job quotas last month, have significantly intensified.

They have evolved into broader demands for the resignation of the 76-year-old Prime Minister, leading to severe clashes between demonstrators and government supporters.

The confrontations have been marked by violent exchanges, with sticks and knives used in the skirmishes, and security forces resorting to live ammunition.

The violence reached a peak on Sunday, resulting in at least 95 deaths, including 14 police officers.

This tragic day brings the total number of fatalities since the protests began in July to at least 283.

The ongoing turmoil reflects widespread dissatisfaction with Hasina’s 15-year tenure and underscores the severe challenges facing Bangladesh’s political stability.
