Saudi Arabia welcomed the US the killing of Al Qaeda head Ayman al-Zawahiri in the US strike in Kabul, the foreign ministry said Tuesday.
“The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) has welcomed Joe Biden statement of killing the terrorist leader of Al Qaeda Ayman Al-Zawahiri,” it said.
Saudi Arabia issued statement after Biden said the United States had killed Zawahiri. Zawahiri was one of the most-wanted terrorists in the world and a mastermind of the September 11, 2001 attacks, Khaleej Times reported today.
According to the Saudi foreign ministry, Zawahiri was considered one of the leaders of terrorism who planned and executed heinous operations in the United States, Saudi Arabia and others countries of the world.
“Thousands of innocent people of different nationalities and religions, including Saudi citizens, were killed,” the statement said.
Saudi Arabia stressed the importance of enhancing cooperation to eradicate terrorism and urged all countries to cooperate to protect innocent people from terrorist organisations.”
Egyptian-born Zawahiri took over Al Qaeda after Osama bin Laden was killed by US special forces in Pakistan in 2011, and had a $25 million US bounty on his head.
