Pakistani and Italian Mountaineers Plan K2 Summit to Commemorate Platinum Jubilee

A collaborative effort between Pakistani and Italian mountaineers has been initiated to commemorate the historic conquest of the world’s second-highest peak, K2.

This endeavor marks the platinum jubilee of K2’s first successful ascent in 1954 by an Italian expedition led by Mr. Ardito Desio, symbolizing seven decades of achievement.

Organized by EvK2CNR in conjunction with the Italian Alpine Club, the 2024 K2 expedition is a testament to the enduring spirit of mountaineering and international cooperation.

The campaign’s launch event in Italy saw the participation of notable figures, including Ms. Daniela Santanchè, Italy’s Federal Minister for Tourism, Mr. Antonio Montani, President of the Italian Alpine Club, Mr. Agostino Da Polenza, President of EvK2CNR, and esteemed guests.

Scheduled for July-August 2024, the K2 expedition aims not only to summit the formidable peak but also to celebrate the prowess and unity of women mountaineers from Pakistan and Italy.

Among the expedition team are four talented women mountaineers from Pakistan, selected to showcase their skills and resilience on this challenging journey.

Currently, these climbers are undergoing rigorous training sessions at Ratu Astor in Pakistan, honing their abilities and preparing for the demanding ascent ahead.

Led by Agostino Da Polenza, with Saima Baig appointed as the Pakistani team leader, the expedition embodies the shared passion for adventure and the pursuit of excellence that transcends borders.

Through this historic undertaking, the mountaineering community seeks to honor the legacy of past achievements while inspiring future generations of climbers to reach new heights.

In addition to commemorating the historic achievement of K2’s first ascent, the expedition also aims to raise awareness about the importance of preserving mountain ecosystems and promoting sustainable tourism in the region. As climbers traverse the rugged terrain of K2, they will witness firsthand the fragility of these pristine environments and the urgent need for conservation efforts.

Through educational outreach and environmental initiatives, the expedition seeks to foster a deeper appreciation for the natural beauty of mountains while advocating for their protection for generations to come.
