North Korea Tests New Hypersonic Missile, Kim Jong Un Oversees Launch

Hypersonic Missile

North Korea has announced the successful testing of a new solid-fuelled hypersonic intermediate-range missile (IRBM), marking another advancement in its weapons program.

The state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported on Wednesday, following the detection of a missile launch towards the east by South Korea and Japan a day earlier.

Photos released by KCNA depict leader Kim Jong Un at the testing site alongside military commanders, showcasing the Hwasong-16B missile.

This test comes shortly after Kim supervised a solid-fuel engine test for an IRBM, highlighting North Korea’s commitment to enhancing its defence capabilities.

Kim hailed the new weapon as a demonstration of North Korea’s “absolute superiority” in defence technology, emphasizing the development of nuclear-capable, solid-fuel systems across various missile ranges.

He vowed to further bolster the country’s arsenal to counter perceived adversaries, including Japan, South Korea, and the United States.

According to KCNA, the Hwasong-16B missile flew approximately 1,000km and reached a peak altitude of 101km before splashing down in the sea between South Korea and Japan.

This test underscores North Korea’s focus on developing sophisticated solid-fuel weapons, known for their concealability, mobility, and quick launch capabilities.

Additionally, North Korea has been advancing its hypersonic weapons technology, with previous tests reported in January.

Analysts suggest that perfected hypersonic IRBMs could potentially target remote US territories in the Pacific, such as Guam and Alaska.

The escalating tensions in the region since 2022, exacerbated by North Korea’s intensified missile testing amid global distractions, have prompted heightened responses from the US and South Korea.

Both nations have intensified military exercises and deterrence strategies, underscoring the evolving security landscape in East Asia.
