Iran’s top security official announced on Wednesday that Tehran supports any peace plan, such as those proposed by China and Brazil, that would be acceptable to both Russia and Ukraine, according to IRNA.
Ali Akbar Ahmadian, the secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC), made these remarks during a meeting of BRICS security chiefs in St. Petersburg, Russia. Ahmadian also urged BRICS to establish a special committee to help facilitate peace between Russia and Ukraine.
In an interview with RT, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov expressed Moscow’s support for the peace initiatives led by Brazil and China.
“We welcome the Brazil-China consensus—a well-known initiative consisting of six points,” Ryabkov said, as reported by The Star. He noted growing support for the initiative in the Global South, pointing to the recent meeting as an example of efforts to move towards a political settlement.
Ryabkov also reiterated Russia’s willingness to resume negotiations.
On May 23, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Brazilian President Lula’s foreign policy advisor, Celso Amorim, issued a joint statement emphasizing that dialogue and negotiations are the only way to resolve the Ukraine conflict. They proposed holding an international conference with equitable participation from all sides to discuss various peace plans at an appropriate time.
