In an extraordinary turn of events, a postcard has finally reached its intended destination in Wales after an astonishing delay of 121 years.
The postcard, initially sent to a bank address, was recently delivered to the Building Society of Swansea, located on Cradock Street, Swansea.
The building now occupying this address is not the same as the one in existence when the postcard was sent, making the story even more intriguing.
The postcard, addressed to a lady named Lydia Davis, was discovered in the mail at the Building Society on a Friday.
This unexpected delivery quickly captured public interest and went viral on social media. The Building Society confirmed the delivery and shared details about this remarkable piece of history.
According to Henry Darby, the bank’s marketing and communications officer, the postcard had been sent to an address that once existed on Cradock Street, but which has since changed.
“The address is correct, we are still 11 (and 12) Cradock Street, but it’s 121 years later than expected,” Darby told Wales Online.
He described the situation as both “wild” and “a little bit spooky.” The postcard features a stamp of King Edward VII, who reigned from 1901 to 1910, and the handwriting and style of the message reflect the early 20th century.
The postcard itself has been somewhat faded and difficult to read, with only the postmark date of August 3, 1903, clearly visible.
A spokeswoman for the Royal Mail commented on the unusual delivery, stating, “It is likely that this postcard was put back into our system rather than being lost in the post for over a century.
When an item is in our system, we are under obligation to deliver it to the correct address.”
The exact reason for the postcard’s lengthy delay remains unclear, adding an air of mystery to its arrival.
The long journey of this postcard serves as a fascinating reminder of the past and the enduring nature of communication across time.
