Germany to Renew Partnership with Palestinian UNRWA Agency

UNRWA Agency

The German government has announced its intention to resume cooperation with the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) in Gaza.

This decision comes following an extensive investigation led by former French foreign minister Catherine Colonna, which aimed to address allegations of UNRWA employees’ involvement in the October 7 attack by Hamas.

The investigation, conducted with meticulous attention to detail, concluded that Israel had not provided sufficient evidence to substantiate its claims that numerous UNRWA staff members were linked to terrorist groups operating in Gaza. As a result, the credibility of these accusations was called into question.

In response to the findings of the investigation, the German foreign and development ministries issued a joint statement expressing their support for the recommendations outlined in the report.

These recommendations include the implementation of reforms within UNRWA, such as strengthening its internal audit function and enhancing external oversight of project management.

Furthermore, the ministries emphasized the importance of swift action in implementing these reforms to ensure the continued effectiveness and neutrality of UNRWA’s operations in Gaza. They also underscored the need for transparency and accountability in all aspects of the agency’s work.

In light of these developments, the German government has signaled its readiness to resume cooperation with UNRWA in Gaza.

This decision aligns with the actions of other nations, including Australia, Canada, Sweden, and Japan, which have already taken steps to renew their support for the agency.

Overall, the resumption of cooperation between Germany and UNRWA represents a significant step forward in supporting humanitarian efforts in Gaza and reaffirming the commitment to upholding the rights and dignity of Palestinian refugees.
