Germany has introduced a new digital platform to simplify the visa application process for individuals seeking to work, study, or reunite with family in the country. This move comes in response to a significant shortage of skilled workers in the German labor market.
Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock hailed the initiative as “a true administrative revolution,” designed to make obtaining essential documents more accessible and efficient.
The online portal offers applicants the option to choose from 28 types of national visas and is available at all 167 German visa offices globally.
Baerbock highlighted the pressing need for such reforms, pointing out that Germany faces an annual shortage of at least 400,000 skilled workers. She stressed that the cumbersome paper-based application process and long waiting times should no longer be barriers for qualified individuals wanting to come to Germany.
This new digital system is part of Germany’s broader effort to modernize its immigration procedures, ensuring they are more streamlined, digital, and secure.
