LONDON: London’s Gatwick Airport’s South terminal was evacuated this morning following a security incident, resulting in significant disruption to passengers and flights.
The incident, initially reported at 9:55 AM as a “passenger security investigation,” escalated to a gold-level emergency at 11:08 AM. In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), Gatwick Airport confirmed that a large portion of the South Terminal had been evacuated as a precaution while authorities investigated the situation. Passengers were advised not to enter the South Terminal while the investigation was ongoing.
The airport assured the public that safety and security were their top priorities and that efforts were underway to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.
Flights departing from the South Terminal have been delayed, with updates expected at 1:52 PM. Passengers were advised to refrain from re-entering the terminal until it is deemed safe. The North Terminal remains unaffected by the incident, according to airport officials.
Witnesses described the scene as “total mayhem,” with emergency services working alongside security teams to manage the situation. Departing passengers were instructed to stay clear of flight gates and the departure lounge.
