Forget Earth, Russia and India are Racing towards a “moon battle”

India and Russia are currently engaged in a competitive race to reach the unexplored South Pole of the moon. The pursuit of lunar exploration is intensifying. Both nations are aiming to achieve the distinction of being the first to successfully land on this celestial location. India’s Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft is slated for a landing attempt on August 23-24. The competing, Russia‘s Luna-25, is scheduled to touch down the moon on August 21.

The two spacecraft are currently on a mission to explore the moon’s uncharted South Pole. Scientists suspect that the area might contain some water ice. The outcome of this contest could hold significant implications for the trajectory of space exploration.

Moon

The South Pole is viewed as a promising region for forthcoming lunar missions and the potential establishment of a lunar settlement, primarily due to its speculated abundance of water ice. Water ice holds the potential to serve as a resource for generating fuel and oxygen to sustain astronauts, as well as supporting potential life forms.

The terrain of the South Pole is believed to possess a relatively level topography, which could facilitate smoother spacecraft landings. However, the act of landing on this astronomical body still presents inherent risks, and both missions confront various challenges.

The Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft is a combined lander and rover configuration, marking India’s inaugural endeavor to land on the moon’s pole. The lander will deploy the rover, which is intended to explore the moon’s surface for a span of up to 14 days.

In contrast, the Luna-25 spacecraft is a more compact and straightforward craft designed solely for lunar landing. It won’t carry a rover but will be equipped with instruments dedicated to examining the moon’s surface and atmosphere.
