Turkish Departure
On Saturday, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan stated that Turkey could “part ways” with the European Union (EU) if deemed necessary in response to a European Parliament report.
The report, adopted earlier in the week, concluded that Turkey’s accession process with the 27-member EU cannot resume under current conditions and urged the EU to explore alternative frameworks for its relationship with Ankara.
Turkey has been an official EU candidate for 24 years, but accession talks have stagnated due to the EU’s concerns about human rights violations and adherence to the rule of law.
Erdogan remarked, “The EU is attempting to distance itself from Turkey. We will assess these developments, and if required, we can sever ties with the EU.”
Turkey’s Foreign Ministry criticized the European Parliament report, stating that it contained baseless allegations and biases and adopted a superficial and shortsighted approach to the country’s EU relations. Thus, Erdogan signals Turkish departure with EU as a last resort.
