Eight individuals lost their lives following an Israeli airstrike on the Iranian embassy in Damascus on Monday, as reported by the IRNA news agency.
The incident has heightened concerns of escalating conflict in the Middle East, particularly in the wake of extensive casualties in Gaza.
According to Iranian sources, the Syrian Air Force successfully intercepted some of the Israeli missiles aimed at the embassy.
Concurrently, Sana, the Syrian state news agency, reported that the attack targeted the Mezzeh neighborhood in Damascus.
Despite the devastation caused by the strike, the Iranian diplomatic mission in Damascus, including the ambassador and their family, emerged unscathed.
However, reports from the Mehr news agency indicate that a high-ranking commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) perished in the attack.
Moreover, Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad swiftly reached out to his Iranian counterpart, Hossein Amirabdollahian, condemning the Israeli aggression during a visit to the Embassy.
The assault inflicted extensive damage on surrounding buildings adjacent to the embassy compound. In response to inquiries about the attack, Israeli forces issued a standard statement, refraining from commenting on reports from foreign media sources.
In addition, this incident unfolds against the backdrop of ongoing Israeli military actions targeting civilians in Gaza, including the bombing of hospitals and the use of lethal force against food-deprived residents.
These actions come in the aftermath of a UN Security Council resolution urging an immediate ceasefire, prompted by Hamas’s response to long-standing Israeli oppression dating back to October 7, 2023.
