Willingness to Collaborate
BEIJING: According to Chinese state media, Chinese President Xi Jinping stated on Wednesday that China is ready to cooperate with the United States, actively managing their differences and collaborating to address global challenges.
Xi emphasized, at an annual dinner hosted by the New York-based National Committee on United States-China Relations, that establishing the “right” way for the United States and China to interact would hold crucial significance for the world.
Ahead of Foreign Minister Wang Yi’s upcoming visit to Washington later this week, Xi urged for the cultivation of more stable bilateral relations, emphasizing the necessity of basing these relations on the principles of “mutual respect, peaceful co-existence, and win-win cooperation.”
The highest-level in-person engagement before the anticipated meeting between U.S. President Joe Biden and Xi in San Francisco at the November Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit will be the visit from Thursday through Saturday by the top Chinese diplomat.
Earlier this summer, several prominent U.S. officials, including U.S. State Secretary Antony Blinken, engaged with their Chinese counterparts in Beijing.
With the aim of averting conflict, Washington has prioritized managing the intense competition between the world’s two largest economies and resolving their differences on various fronts, ranging from trade to Taiwan and the South China Sea.
In a commentary, the state-controlled Global Times of China noted that Chinese observers perceive the visit by Wang as a potential precursor to a meeting between the heads of the two states.
However, the commentary emphasized that Washington must make tangible efforts to address Beijing’s concerns and demonstrate its sincerity. Overall, Chinese state media reports Xi Jinping’s willingness to collaborate with the United States amid managing differences.
