Biden says Trump doesn’t like police and didn’t have courage to stop Jan. 6 attack

US President Joe Biden criticized some of the Republicans who might run against him in 2024. He said that his predecessor, Donald Trump, didn’t have the “courage” to stop the attack on the Capitol on January 6, 2021.

In a taped speech to the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives Conference, Biden said, “The police were heroes that day.” “Donald Trump didn’t have the courage to act.

“All across the country, the brave women and men in blue should never forget that. You can’t be for both rebels and cops. You can’t be for both rebellion and democracy at the same time. You can’t be for rebellion and for America at the same time.”

In his speech for the Florida event, he made fun of other important Republicans in the state, like Governor Ron DeSantis, who is seen as a rising star in the party and could run for president.

“In the condition you’re in now, Governor DeSantis, Senator Marco Rubio, and Senator Rick Scott all voted against banning assault weapons,” said Biden, who has been recovering from COVID in isolation at the White House.

“It seems clear to me: If you want to bring weapons of war onto American streets, you’re not on the side of the police.”

Biden doesn’t talk about his political enemies by name very often. Both Trump and DeSantis have talked about running against Biden in the 2024 elections.

On Nov. 8, midterm elections will decide if Biden’s Democratic Party keeps control of Congress. These elections are seen as a test of the arguments for and against giving Biden a second four-year term.

Biden’s comments brought together law enforcement, guns, and threats to democracy, which are all hot-button issues that Democrats hope will put Republicans on the defensive.

After protests about police brutality against black people, Trump said he was on the side of gun owners, the police, and “law and order.” Last month, Biden signed a bipartisan bill into law to make guns safer. He has been trying to show that more measures like those will keep police safe.

In the attack on the Capitol, thousands of Trump supporters broke into the building to stop Congress from recognizing Biden as the winner of the 2020 presidential election.

Over the past six weeks, a panel in the U.S. House of Representatives has built a case that the president stirred up the violent crowd and then sat back and watched.

Trump and many Republican lawmakers have said that the Jan. 6 committee is politically motivated, even though it relies on testimony from the Republican former president’s staff and friends. People who support Biden think that the hearings could make Trump supporters change their minds about who they support. A Reuters/Ipsos poll from last week found that 32% of Republicans don’t think Trump should run for president in 2024. This is up from 26% at the start of the hearings.
