Former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has made explosive claims, alleging that the head of a covert unit tasked with countering Israeli intelligence within Iran was actually an Israeli spy.
In an interview with CNN Turk, Ahmadinejad stated, “Israel organized complex operations inside Iran, gaining access to sensitive information. This reality remains largely unacknowledged in Iran. The individual responsible for countering Israel was, in fact, working for them.”
He asserted that by 2021, it became clear that the senior official overseeing efforts against Mossad’s activities was collaborating with the Israeli agency. Ahmadinejad further claimed that an additional 20 agents within the Iranian intelligence apparatus were also linked to Israeli intelligence.
He accused these double agents of providing critical information about Iran’s nuclear program and alleged their involvement in the theft of Iranian nuclear documents in 2018, as well as the assassinations of several Iranian nuclear scientists.
These allegations follow reports that an Iranian informant tipped off Israel about the location of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah prior to an airstrike on his headquarters in Beirut.
Ahmadinejad’s claims echo earlier assertions by former Iranian intelligence minister Ali Younesi, who warned that Israeli spies have infiltrated the highest echelons of the Iranian government. Younesi remarked that “the Mossad has penetrated many government departments over the last decade, to such an extent that top officials should fear for their lives.”
As tensions in the region escalate, Iran, a supporter of Hezbollah, has vowed to retaliate against Israel, raising concerns about the potential for wider conflict. Recently, Israel announced the assassination of senior Hezbollah commander Muhammad Jaafar Qasir, who was reportedly in charge of weapons transfers from Iran and its affiliates.
