A plane traveling from New Zealand to Australia experiences an in-flight emergency at Auckland Airport, resulting in more than 50 injuries

On Latam Airlines flight LA800, traveling from Sydney to Auckland, there was a “technical issue” that resulted in significant turbulence.

A technical issue on an international flight to Auckland Airport resulted in 50 passengers being injured this afternoon. Following the incident on Chilean airline Latam, 14 Hato Hone St John units were dispatched at 3:58 pm. The affected passengers received treatment for various conditions, with one individual in a serious state and the rest in moderate to minor conditions.

Ten patients were transported to Middlemore Hospital, one to Auckland City Hospital, and another to Starship Children’s Hospital. The involved aircraft was Latam Airlines flight LA800, traveling from Sydney to Auckland, which experienced a “technical problem” that led to significant movement among passengers.

Airline stance:

The plane arrived at Auckland Airport as planned, despite an incident that impacted some passengers and cabin crew members. Upon landing, these individuals received prompt assistance and were attended to by medical staff at the airport, as necessary. An airline representative informed the Herald, stating:

“Latam expresses its regret for the inconvenience and injuries that may have occurred during this situation. The airline remains committed to prioritizing safety within its operational standards.”

In response to the incident, St John dispatched seven ambulances, two operations managers, two major incident support team vehicles, one command unit, and two rapid response vehicles to provide on-site support.

A female passenger on the flight described feeling a “quick little drop” during the journey. She, who previously worked as a flight attendant, expressed that this was an unprecedented experience for her, as the entire plane seemed to freeze momentarily.

Upon arrival in New Zealand, she noticed at least five individuals being attended to by waiting paramedics. Grateful for her safe arrival, she remained unaware of the severity of the incident for other passengers on board.

Auckland Airport spokesperson stance:

An Auckland Airport spokesperson confirmed that their emergency service team was collaborating with St John, following a request for medical assistance from a Latam Airlines flight arriving from Sydney. To address the situation, additional ambulances were dispatched as well. The police acknowledged the incident and directed further inquiries to St John. As of 6 pm that day, ambulances were still being seen departing from Auckland Airport.
