PESHAWAR/ISLAMABAD: Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi held a crucial meeting with Governor of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa after PTI launched its Islamabad march on Sunday.
Naqvi arrived in Peshawar from Lahore as political tensions intensified following the launch of the PTI’s long march towards Islamabad.
Interior Minister held a key meeting with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi to review the province’s law and order situation. The discussions come as PTI Chief Minister Sohail Afridi leads a convoy towards the federal capital.
The meeting is focused on security arrangements and the evolving situation following the breakdown of negotiations between the federal government and the opposition. The talks failed to produce an agreement mainly because of differences over the KP government’s role in counterterrorism operations.
The federal government has maintained that the provincial administration must cooperate with security forces in combating terrorism. Officials have also warned that the PTI march will not be allowed to enter Islamabad or create a law-and-order situation.
Naqvi earlier briefed Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and President Asif Ali Zardari about the negotiations with the opposition. He also discussed the political situation with the leadership before travelling to Peshawar.
The PTI, meanwhile, has proceeded with its planned march after the negotiations ended without a final agreement. Afridi announced that the convoy would move through several districts of KP before supporters from across the province gather at Khairabad on October 8.
The latest meeting between Naqvi and Kundi is therefore taking place against the backdrop of heightened political tensions and concerns over security as the PTI convoy moves towards Islamabad.
