Massive Quake Strikes Flores Island as Hundreds of Aftershocks Follow
A powerful magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck eastern Indonesia on Saturday, August 15, killing at least 47 people and causing widespread destruction across Flores Island.
The earthquake hit at around 5:58 a.m. local time, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
Its epicentre was located approximately 42 miles north-northwest of Ende in East Nusa Tenggara province.
The strong shaking was felt across several districts and forced residents to flee their homes in panic.
Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency recorded at least 235 aftershocks following the main earthquake.
The strongest aftershock reached a magnitude of 6.2, adding to fears among residents already affected by the initial tremor.
Authorities initially issued a tsunami warning for coastal communities.
Residents living near the coast were advised to immediately move to higher ground as officials monitored sea levels.
The tsunami warning was later withdrawn after monitoring systems detected no significant or dangerous changes in sea level.
Despite the lifting of the warning, authorities continued urging residents to remain cautious because of the risk posed by strong aftershocks.
Death Toll Reaches 47 as Rescue Teams Struggle to Reach Remote Villages
Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Agency confirmed that at least 47 bodies had been recovered following the earthquake.
Most of the confirmed deaths were reported in Sikka, Manggarai and East Manggarai regencies.
At least 50 people were injured and taken to hospitals for treatment.
Officials fear the number of casualties could increase as emergency crews gain access to isolated communities.
Rescue operations have been complicated by landslides triggered by the earthquake.
Several roads have been damaged or blocked, preventing emergency vehicles from reaching some villages.
Teams are attempting to clear debris while searching damaged buildings and affected settlements for survivors.
Remote areas remain particularly difficult to access because of damaged transportation routes and disrupted communications.
Power outages across the region have created further challenges for emergency workers.
Electricity failures have interrupted mobile phone services and made communication with several affected communities more difficult.
Authorities are continuing to assess the full scale of the destruction.
Emergency teams are also monitoring unstable slopes because further aftershocks could trigger additional landslides.
Hundreds of Homes and Public Buildings Damaged as 2,000 Residents Displaced
The earthquake caused extensive damage to residential areas across Flores Island.
At least 157 homes were destroyed, while nearly 200 additional houses suffered varying levels of damage.
Around 2,000 residents have been displaced from their homes.
Many survivors are staying in temporary shelters and emergency camps established in safer areas.
Authorities are working to provide food, clean water, medical supplies and temporary accommodation to displaced families.
Public infrastructure has also suffered significant damage.
At least 87 schools were reportedly damaged by the earthquake.
Another 18 health facilities were affected, increasing pressure on medical services treating injured residents.
Several places of worship were also damaged.
Officials are inspecting public buildings to determine whether they remain safe to use.
The combination of damaged roads, landslides, power failures and continuing aftershocks has slowed relief operations.
Rescue teams remain focused on reaching communities that have not yet been fully assessed.
