The Punjab government has extended the detention of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan’s three sisters by another 30 days, the Lahore High Court (LHC) was informed on Monday.
Aleema Khan, Uzma Khan and Noreen Niazi will remain in detention until November 20, according to the government’s report submitted during court proceedings.
The hearing took place before Justice Abher Gul Khan. A government lawyer told the court that the provincial government approved the extension following a recommendation from the Lahore deputy commissioner.
Moreover, the Punjab home secretary’s report confirmed the government’s decision. The court subsequently disposed of the petition after taking the report into account.
Family Challenges Continued Detention
The case concerns a petition filed by Shahrez Khan, Aleema Khan’s son, seeking the recovery and release of his mother and two aunts. The three women were detained in September under Section 3 of the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) Ordinance, 1960. Their detention came ahead of PTI’s planned nationwide protest demanding Imran Khan’s release.
Aleema Khan was detained on September 20, while Uzma Khan and Noreen Niazi were taken into custody the following day.
Earlier, the petitioner’s lawyer argued that the original 30-day detention orders had expired in October. He asked the court to direct authorities to produce the women and release them.
Court Proceedings Continue
During the latest hearing, the court noted that the detention notification had been issued by the deputy commissioner. However, the official had not been named as a respondent in the petition.
Consequently, the court observed that it could not issue an order beyond the scope of the case before it.
The latest extension means the three sisters will remain detained until November 20 unless the order is changed. The development adds another chapter to the ongoing legal proceedings surrounding their detention.
