PTI founder Imran Khan’s sister Aleema Khan has been arrested in Lahore, adding to tensions surrounding the party’s ongoing protest campaign.
Aleema Khan was taken into custody after leaving her residence in Lahore to travel towards a gym. Reports said police intercepted her during the journey and later shifted her to Kot Lakhpat Jail.
The latest development comes after Aleema and her sisters faced restrictions while attempting to meet Imran Khan at Adiala Jail.
Aleema Khan Arrested in Lahore
According to available reports, Aleema Khan was detained by Lahore police on Sunday. Family and party sources confirmed her arrest, while details surrounding the detention emerged gradually.
Reports said she had left her home to go to the gym when police took her into custody. She was subsequently shifted to Kot Lakhpat Jail, according to reports citing family sources.
The detention was reportedly carried out under Section 3 of the Maintenance of Public Order Ordinance. The measure allows authorities to order preventive detention under specified circumstances.
The arrest has drawn renewed attention because of Aleema Khan’s recent activities outside Adiala Jail.
What Happened Outside Adiala Jail?
Aleema Khan and her sisters had previously attempted to meet Imran Khan at Adiala Jail. However, they were stopped at a checkpoint outside the prison during one such attempt.
Following the denial of a meeting, Aleema Khan staged a sit-in with a small number of PTI workers. She had also announced changes to the party’s arrangements outside the jail.
Under the revised arrangement, Aleema said only the three sisters would visit the jail in the future. She also said party workers would not be called to gather there.
The developments followed repeated efforts by Imran Khan’s sisters to meet him at the prison.
Aleema Khan Faced Court Action Earlier
The latest arrest also comes after legal proceedings involving Aleema Khan and her sister Uzma Khan.
In July, an Islamabad anti-terrorism court declared Aleema and Uzma Khan proclaimed offenders in a case linked to the October 4, 2024 protest. The court also issued perpetual arrest warrants for both sisters.
The court proceedings followed their repeated absence from hearings despite being summoned. Police subsequently submitted a compliance report regarding the proclamation process.
The court also directed investigating authorities to provide details of the sisters’ movable and immovable properties. The case remains connected to the October 4 protest registered at Kohsar Police Station.
Arrest Comes Amid PTI Protest Plans
Aleema Khan’s arrest comes as PTI continues preparations for a planned protest campaign. The party has announced a September 27 march linked to its demands concerning Imran Khan.
Therefore, her detention has added another significant development to the political situation surrounding the PTI founder and his family.
For now, Aleema Khan remains in custody following her arrest in Lahore. Meanwhile, attention is focused on the circumstances of her detention and the legal proceedings connected to her previous cases.
