Islamabad court approved the bail of PTI founder Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi in the Toshakhana fake receipt case. It also granted bail for Imran Khan in five additional cases. These cases comprised charges of attempted murder and defaming the army. Thus, this decision provided significant relief after months of legal proceedings.
Judge Muhammad Afzal Majuka examined the presented evidence closely. He concluded that the prosecution offered insufficient proof. As a result, he allowed bail for Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi. Each posted a surety bond of Rs 50,000.
Prosecution Struggled to Provide Concrete Evidence
In the Toshakhana matter, authorities accused the couple of fraud. They alleged that a fake receipt covered luxury gifts such as watches and cufflinks. Prosecutors claimed these items came from Toshakhana through forged signatures. However, the judge found no compelling evidence to support the charges. Therefore, the court released both on bail.
The army defamation case stemmed from Imran Khanโs remarks on television. The FIR stated that he used strong language against senior officers. Complainants argued that his words caused unrest. Nevertheless, the court determined that no material evidence existed on record. Bail received approval in this case as well.
For the attempted murder charges related to protests, the prosecution failed to link Imran Khan directly. They could not demonstrate that he organized the demonstrations or appeared at the locations. Consequently, the judge granted bail here too, along with three other cases. Each required a Rs 50,000 surety bond.
Imran Khan had been detained since August 2023
Imran Khan had remained in custody since August 2023. Numerous cases emerged after his removal through a no-confidence vote in April 2022. Supporters were encouraged by the bail rulings, as they marked progress toward fairness. Meanwhile, critics continued to debate the merits of the accusations. The decisions allowed Imran Khan greater freedom to participate in public affairs while the trials continued.
