ISLAMABAD: Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has defended Islamabad’s top officials after their horse-drawn buggy ride at an Independence Day parade sparked criticism.
CDA Chairman Sohail Ashraf and Islamabad Police Inspector General Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi appeared in the buggy during the August 14 event.
Videos and photographs of the officials quickly circulated online, prompting criticism from social media users and journalists.
Many questioned the use of official privilege at a public celebration amid Pakistan’s economic challenges.
Naqvi Explains Buggy Arrangement
However, Naqvi said neither official was responsible for the decision to use the ceremonial buggy.
He explained that authorities had arranged the buggy for the chief guest and the interior minister.
Naqvi said their arrival was delayed because President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif were holding a meeting.
He added that residents had waited for the celebrations since 5pm, while officials expected further delays around 6pm.
Therefore, Naqvi said authorities instructed the officers to begin the programme rather than keep the public waiting.
He said the officials initially hesitated to start the event without the chief guest and minister.
According to Naqvi, the officers eventually used the buggy because authorities directed them to proceed with the programme.
The minister said the officials had initially avoided starting the celebrations without senior leadership.
Meanwhile, Naqvi thanked Islamabad residents for making the Independence Day celebrations successful.
The controversy has renewed debate over official privilege and the conduct of senior government officials during public events.
