Global Peace Index 2026 Released
Iceland has once again been named the most peaceful country in the world, according to the Global Peace Index 2026.
The index ranks countries on the basis of safety, conflict levels, political stability, and militarisation.
Iceland secured the top position for the 19th consecutive year. The country is known for low crime, strong social trust, and limited military activity.
New Zealand and Switzerland Among Top Five
New Zealand ranked second in the latest list. Switzerland secured third place, followed by Slovenia and Ireland.
Austria, Portugal, Singapore, Finland, and Japan also made it to the top 10 most peaceful countries.
The ranking shows that European countries continue to dominate the global peace list. Seven of the top 10 countries are from Western and Central Europe.
Conflict and Militarisation Raise Global Concern
The report comes at a time when global peace is under pressure due to rising conflicts and increased military spending.
Experts say peaceful countries usually have strong institutions, low crime rates, stable governance, and limited involvement in external conflicts.
