Hyderabad Airport is set to resume commercial flight operations after more than a decade. The move could strengthen air connectivity in Sindh and provide an alternative airport during emergencies.
Major Runway Upgrade Planned
The Pakistan Airports Authority plans to begin work on the airport soon. The project includes a major runway extension.
The existing 7,000-foot runway could expand to around 11,500 feet. This upgrade would allow larger aircraft, including Boeing 777s, to use the airport.
Authorities also plan to improve passenger facilities. These changes would support the airport’s return to regular flight operations.
Backup Airport for Major Cities
The revived Hyderabad Airport could also serve as an emergency alternative for Karachi, Sukkur, and Nawabshah.
Under the proposed contingency plan, airlines could divert flights to Hyderabad during severe weather or other disruptions. Passengers could then travel by road to their original destinations.
As a result, the airport could help airlines maintain services when other airports face operational problems.
Commercial Flights Could Return
Hyderabad Airport has not handled a commercial passenger flight since 2013. Pakistan International Airlines operated the last commercial service from the airport at that time.
The proposed revival could also restore domestic air services and give Hyderabad a stronger role in regional aviation.
However, the Pakistan Airports Authority has not yet issued a formal announcement. Its spokesperson, Saif Ullah, confirmed that the airport’s revival remains part of the authority’s plans.
Therefore, the project is still at the planning stage. Further details about airlines, routes, schedules, and the exact reopening date are expected after the authorities finalize the project.
The development could mark a major change for Hyderabad’s aviation connectivity after 13 years without regular commercial passenger flights.
