A Chinese humanoid robot has attracted global attention after demonstrating the ability to produce realistic tears on command.
The robot, named Yansyn-X2, showcased the technology during the 2026 Inclusion Conference in Shanghai.
Robot Produces Tears During Live Demonstration
During the demonstration, a presenter asked the robot whether it could cry.
Seconds later, a single tear appeared near its eye.
The unusual demonstration quickly drew attention because of the robot’s human-like facial response.
Yansyn-X2 was developed by Yanxi Technology, a robotics company based in Ningbo, China.
The company first introduced the humanoid robot in April 2026.
It describes Yansyn-X2 as a bionic facial-expression robot designed for more natural emotional interaction.
AI Controls Facial Expressions and Tears
The robot uses artificial intelligence to analyze conversations and identify emotional cues.
When its system detects language associated with sadness or empathy, it can trigger a corresponding facial expression.
A separate microfluidic system produces the tears.
The mechanism reportedly uses a miniature pump and precision fluid-control technology to release liquid near the robot’s eyes.
This allows the robot to create a more realistic crying effect.
However, the robot does not actually experience sadness or other human emotions.
Instead, its responses are generated through programmed systems and artificial intelligence.
Robot Does Not Actually Feel Emotions
The technology is linked to a field known as affective computing.
Affective computing focuses on developing machines that can recognize, interpret and respond to human emotions.
The goal is to make interactions between people and machines feel more natural.
Yansyn-X2 can simulate emotional responses, but there is no indication that it experiences emotions in the human sense.
Its crying ability is therefore a technological simulation rather than genuine emotional expression.
Yansyn-X2 Is Not Yet a Fully Walking Humanoid
Despite its human-like appearance, the current Yansyn-X2 model is a static humanoid system.
It is not designed to walk independently like some other advanced humanoid robots.
However, it can perform several upper-body movements.
The robot can turn its head, track people and move its arms and upper body.
These capabilities allow it to interact with people in a more lifelike manner.
Yanxi Technology says future versions could become even more expressive.
The company is reportedly exploring bionic muscles instead of conventional servo motors.
Such technology could allow future robots to produce smoother movements and more complex facial expressions.
Possible Uses Include Elderly Care and Tourism
Yanxi Technology sees several potential applications for its technology.
These include companionship robots, tourism services, elderly care and other customer-facing applications.
More expressive robots could potentially communicate with users in ways that appear more familiar and engaging.
The technology could also be used in environments where emotional interaction is considered important.
However, questions remain about how people will respond to machines designed to closely imitate human emotions.
A New Direction for Humanoid Robotics
Yansyn-X2 reflects a wider effort to make humanoid robots more realistic and socially interactive.
Robotics companies are increasingly focusing not only on movement and intelligence but also on facial expressions and human-machine communication.
Features such as blinking, smiling and simulated crying are designed to make robots appear more responsive.
The latest demonstration shows how quickly this field is evolving.
While Yansyn-X2 cannot genuinely feel emotions, its ability to simulate crying highlights the growing sophistication of emotional AI and humanoid robotics.
