Huawei has launched the Mate XT2, its latest flagship foldable smartphone, as competition intensifies in China’s premium handset market. The device folds twice and opens into a tablet-sized display. It also features Huawei’s new Kirin 9050 Pro chip.
According to Huawei, the processor delivers greater computing power while consuming less electricity. The company says this design helps it overcome restrictions on access to advanced US technology.
The Mate XT2 also introduces a redesigned folding mechanism and improved water resistance. An optional privacy display prevents nearby people from viewing the screen.
Huawei has additionally upgraded the phone’s cameras. Company tests show the new device delivers 42% better overall performance than its predecessor.
Huawei Maintains Market Dominance
Huawei’s launch comes as Xiaomi prepares to introduce a competing foldable phone. Meanwhile, Apple is expected to unveil its latest iPhone lineup, with speculation surrounding a foldable model.
Huawei currently leads China’s overall smartphone market. IDC data showed the company held a 22.6% market share during the second quarter.
Apple followed with an 18.1% share, while Xiaomi held 12.4%.
Huawei’s advantage is even stronger in the foldable segment. Smart Analytics Global reported that Huawei accounted for 68% of foldable smartphone shipments in China during the second quarter.
The company does not sell smartphones in the United States because of sanctions.
The Mate XT2 launch therefore represents an important effort to strengthen Huawei’s position as Apple and Xiaomi expand their premium smartphone offerings.
