KARACHI: Karachi is moving toward smarter traffic management as the city administration plans to computerise traffic signals. Authorities also approved digital meters for rickshaws to make fares clearer for commuters.
The decisions came during a Regional Transport Authority Board meeting chaired by Commissioner Karachi Hassan Naqvi. Officials discussed several measures aimed at improving traffic movement and public transport services across the city.
Karachi Starts Traffic Signal Upgrades
Officials told the meeting that work has already started on computerising traffic signals. The initiative aims to reduce congestion and improve traffic flow at busy intersections.
The first phase will cover five important traffic signals. Authorities will initially upgrade signals at PIDC, Sindh Club and Avari Towers.
Commissioner Hassan Naqvi also shared an update on existing traffic signals. He said authorities have restored 12 of the city’s 16 non-functional signals.
The development could help improve traffic movement in several busy areas. Moreover, computerised systems may allow authorities to manage traffic more efficiently during peak hours.
Digital Meters Planned for Rickshaws
The RTA Board also formally approved digital meters for rickshaws. The measure aims to improve fare transparency and make journeys more convenient for passengers.
Digital meters could help reduce disputes between commuters and drivers over fares. Additionally, they could provide passengers with greater clarity about the cost of their trips.
The move forms part of wider efforts to improve public transport services in Karachi. Authorities are also focusing on expanding transportation options for residents.
New Bus Routes to Address Commuter Needs
Commissioner Hassan Naqvi directed the RTA to introduce new bus routes across Karachi. He said the routes should reflect the actual travel needs of citizens.
