Gracie Abrams once feared that falling in love could change the emotional edge behind her music. However, her relationship with actor Paul Mescal has given the Grammy-nominated singer a different creative perspective. Rather than losing inspiration, Abrams discovered that happiness created more room for reflection. She now says feeling secure has had an unexpectedly positive effect on her songwriting.
Gracie Abrams Opens Up About Love and Music
Abrams previously admitted that she worried a stable relationship might affect her creative drive.
“I was worried feeling secure and stable was threatening my drive to write music,” she previously shared. “It freaked me out.”
Her comments soon attracted significant attention online. However, Abrams was surprised by how strongly people reacted to her words.
“I’m like, ‘Are we on crack? Like, what the f—?’ ” she joked, adding, “That was my cue to be like, ‘Oh, remember why you don’t look [at social media]?’ Run with it, circus.”
Looking back, the singer realised that her concern came from unfamiliar territory. She had simply never written music while experiencing genuine happiness and emotional security.
“And I was like, ‘Oh, s–t, how am I going to approach this?’… And it’s had the most amazing effect on my writing,” she explained.
“It has given me the most amount of space to reflect on everything in my life… It is the greatest gift, period.”
Paul Mescal Becomes Part of Her Musical World
Abrams and Mescal have also found ways to bring their creativity into their relationship.
The couple reportedly shares a strong interest in music. Their creative connection even resulted in Mescal receiving a musical credit on Abrams’ song Imaginary Friend.
The actor contributed a guitar part to the track, adding another personal connection to Abrams’ music.
“We’re a very musical household, and so there’s always something brewing,” she said.
Abrams also spoke warmly about how Mescal influences her creatively and personally.
“I feel lucky to be generally inspired by him as a person and by his brain. It’s the easiest thing to make stuff together.”
Abrams Praises Mescal’s Musical Talent
The singer has also been impressed by Mescal’s preparation for his upcoming portrayal of Paul McCartney.
Her admiration was particularly clear when she discussed his guitar abilities.
“He’s like an alien. I mean, he’s better at guitar backwards than I have been at guitar my whole life.”
While Abrams has become more open about the relationship, she remains careful about protecting parts of her personal life.
“That is a part of my life that brings me so much peace and joy… it’s not like an open-door policy.”
For Abrams, the relationship appears to have brought more than personal happiness. It has also changed how she approaches her creativity.
Instead of allowing love to quiet her artistic voice, she has found new emotional space to explore through music. Her experience suggests that inspiration can grow from stability just as easily as it can emerge from heartbreak.
