At least nine people, including a child, died after a fire broke out at a hotel in Kolkata, India, on Wednesday, officials said.
West Bengal Fire Services Director Anuj Sharma confirmed the deaths following the early morning blaze. Thick smoke quickly spread throughout the budget hotel.
Rescuers found several victims inside bathrooms after battling the fire. Meanwhile, emergency teams rescued nine people and shifted them to hospitals.
The rescued group included six men, two women and a child, according to fire department officials. Authorities continued rescue and relief operations at the scene.
Preliminary findings indicated that an air conditioner may have exploded and triggered the fire. However, officials said investigators would determine the exact cause.
Furthermore, Santosh Pathak, a member of West Bengalโs ruling party, said some victims appeared to be Bangladeshi nationals.
He said those individuals may have travelled to Kolkata for medical treatment. Authorities were working to confirm the victimsโ nationalities.
Around 60 guests reportedly stayed at the hotel when the fire erupted. Emergency services responded quickly as thick smoke engulfed the building.
Hotel and building fires remain a recurring concern in India. Poor firefighting facilities and violations of safety regulations often increase the risks during such incidents.
