Independence Day celebrations in Pakistan have changed significantly over the years. However, the emotions of patriotism, pride and belonging remain deeply rooted among young people. Previously, young volunteers prepared neighbourhoods with notebooks, pens and paper decorations. They visited homes, collected small contributions and decorated streets with green-and-white flags, buntings and lights.
Today, smartphones and social media have transformed those traditions. Young Pakistanis now create patriotic videos, digital artwork, cinematic vlogs and coordinated online campaigns. Many also decorate cars and bikes while wearing green-and-white clothing and jewellery.
From Street Decorations to Digital Creativity
Muhammad Yasir, a government school teacher with two decades of experience, remembers how students prepared for August 14 weeks in advance.
“Over the years, I have seen firsthand how young people have adapted the way they celebrate,” Yasir said.
“Earlier, children worked together, spending hours hanging lights across streets and decorating school halls. Today, they use technology to express the same feelings. The tools have changed, but their love for the country has not.”
Meanwhile, 22-year-old content creator Aaniat Khalid uses social media to share Pakistan’s story with wider audiences.
“Social media has given our generation a global platform to express our love for Pakistan,” she said.
Patriotism Meets Entrepreneurship
Young entrepreneurs are also combining patriotism with creativity and business. Many women sell patriotic jewellery, customised badges, digital artwork, themed clothing and handmade crafts online.
Consequently, Independence Day has created opportunities for home-based businesses to reach new customers.
Social analyst Adnan Aamir believes these changes reflect wider social evolution.
“Every generation expresses its connection with the country using the tools and technology available to it,” he said.
The celebration style may continue evolving, but its core message remains unchanged. From decorated streets to viral videos, Pakistan’s youth continue to express pride in their homeland.
