Pakistan has secured safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz for another liquefied natural gas shipment from Qatar, easing pressure on its energy supply.
The LNG tanker loaded its cargo at Qatar’s Ras Laffan facility in late June. Ship tracking data showed the vessel crossed the strategic waterway over the weekend and is expected to reach Pakistan’s LNG import terminal by Tuesday.
Passage Negotiated With Iran
People familiar with the matter said Pakistani officials negotiated the vessel’s safe passage with Iran.
The shipment would become the second Qatari LNG cargo to reach Pakistan this month through the Strait of Hormuz.
LNG traffic through the waterway remains heavily disrupted. However, some vessels have continued to pass through the strategic route despite ongoing regional tensions.
Pakistan has used its diplomatic relationship with Iran to facilitate several LNG shipments since strikes began in late February. The government has been trying to maintain energy supplies and avoid disruptions to electricity generation.
Qatari LNG Shipment Eases Supply Pressure
Pakistan had considered purchasing LNG from the spot market if the Qatari cargo failed to cross the strait.
A successful delivery could allow the government to avoid another spot-market purchase. LNG prices have climbed to their highest level since 2022, increasing the cost of securing additional supplies.
The latest shipment is particularly important because Qatar remains Pakistan’s main LNG supplier.
Pakistan received nearly all of its LNG imports from Qatar last year. The country also operates the world’s largest LNG export facility at Ras Laffan.
However, only a small volume of LNG is currently moving through the Strait of Hormuz. Qatar’s Energy Minister Saad Sherida Al Kaabi has previously highlighted the limited LNG traffic through the waterway.
The latest passage therefore provides temporary relief for Pakistan as it manages its energy requirements amid continued disruptions to regional LNG trade.
