Hong Kong’s Cantonese pop music scene has lost one of its influential voices. Renowned lyricist Peter Lai, who helped shape the city’s golden era of Cantopop, died at 76. Lai passed away on Wednesday morning after suffering a stroke earlier this year. His son and a longtime friend confirmed his death during a press conference on Thursday.
Known as “The Lyrical Maverick,” Lai built a remarkable career through lyrics that connected with audiences across generations. His work became closely associated with some of Hong Kong’s most celebrated musical stars.
Peter Lai’s Contribution to Cantopop
Lai wrote the lyrics for “Monica,” a major 1984 hit performed by superstar Leslie Cheung. The song became one of Hong Kong’s most widely recognised Cantopop classics.
His songwriting also helped boost the popularity of other major artists. These included generational stars such as Sam Hui and Anita Mui.
Hui paid tribute to Lai following his death.
“Thank you for crafting countless remarkable works for the Hong Kong cantopop scene,” Hui wrote in a tribute note.
“Your lyrics are exoteric yet never vulgar.”
Lai reached the peak of his decades-long career during the 1970s and 1980s. He belonged to Hong Kong’s first generation of Cantopop lyricists.
He worked alongside notable lyricists James Wong and Jimmy Lo. Together, they helped establish a distinctive lyrical identity for Hong Kong’s rapidly developing pop industry.
Lyrics Rooted in Everyday Hong Kong Life
Lai’s work stood out for its humour and grassroots appeal. He often drew inspiration from working-class communities and ordinary experiences. His lyrics reflected the changing social landscape of Hong Kong during its economic boom. Consequently, his work resonated with listeners who recognised elements of their own lives in his songs.
Following his death, tributes poured across social media. Fans and fellow music lovers remembered his contribution to Hong Kong’s musical heritage.
“Who can replace your place?” one user wrote, referencing Lai’s famous line from “Monica”.

Lai’s passing marks the end of an important chapter in Cantopop history. However, his memorable lyrics and cultural influence will continue to live through the music he helped create.
