The district administration of Pasrur announced on Wednesday that all government and private schools will remain closed due to heavy rains and widespread flooding. The precautionary measure comes after intermittent downpours and overflowing drains submerged large sections of the city and nearby villages, creating serious risks for residents and students alike.
Officials reported that continuous rainfall breached drainage dykes and safety barriers, allowing water to flow into more than a hundred villages across the region. The flooding has severely impacted agricultural land, with thousands of acres of paddy and fodder crops now under water. This has raised concerns about potential food shortages and financial losses for farmers who were already grappling with high input costs this season.
In addition to damage to farmland, the heavy rains have disrupted daily life. Main city roads were left inundated, while railway tracks were also submerged, bringing traffic movement to a near standstill. Residents in low-lying areas were forced to wade through waist-deep water, while some villages reported being cut off entirely due to impassable routes.
Authorities said the decision to close schools was made purely on safety grounds, as many routes leading to educational institutions had become inaccessible. “The safety of students is our foremost priority. Until conditions improve, schools will remain closed,” an administration spokesperson confirmed.
Local rescue and relief teams have been mobilized to assist affected families. Pumps are being deployed to clear standing water in the worst-hit areas, although officials cautioned that it may take several days before life returns to normal. Meanwhile, farmers have appealed to the government for urgent compensation to cover crop losses, warning that prolonged flooding could devastate their livelihoods.
With the rains showing no sign of abating, Pasrur’s residents remain on high alert as they brace for further challenges in the coming days.
