The Higher Education Commission (HEC) has announced an increase in monthly salaries for university professors across Pakistan. The revised pay structure will apply to teachers working under the tenure track system.
According to the new policy, universities will implement revised salaries from July 1. Moreover, the HEC has set new minimum and maximum salary limits for professors.
New Salary Structure Announced
Under the revised structure, professors will receive between Rs. 402,000 and Rs. 712,000 per month. Meanwhile, associate professors will receive salaries ranging from Rs. 370,000 to Rs. 625,000.
Similarly, assistant professors will receive between Rs. 288,000 and Rs. 553,000 monthly. The revised figures represent a significant increase for faculty members under the tenure track system.
Universities to Fund Revised Salaries
The HEC said universities will finance the revised salaries through their own resources. Therefore, institutions will need to arrange funds to implement the new pay structure.
The decision comes as higher education institutions seek to retain qualified teaching staff and strengthen academic standards. Furthermore, the revised salaries could help universities attract experienced academics and improve faculty retention.
The HEC’s announcement covers professors, associate professors and assistant professors working under the tenure track system. However, universities will remain responsible for meeting the financial requirements linked to the revised salary structure.
The new policy also applies retrospectively from July 1, meaning eligible faculty members can receive salaries according to the revised structure from that date. Consequently, the decision could provide financial relief to teachers covered by the system.
The commission has not indicated a separate funding allocation for the revised salaries. Instead, universities must use their own resources to meet the increased monthly payments.
