PM Shehbaz Establishes 25-Member Committee to Assess Medical Institutions

Medical Institutions

In response to the recent return of hundreds of medical students to Pakistan following a violent attack on international students in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, the government has established a special committee to evaluate the condition of public and private medical colleges across the country.

Sources within the government informed that Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar will chair this newly formed 25-member committee.

The primary objectives of the committee are to review the standards and challenges faced by both public and private medical institutions and to provide specific recommendations for their improvement.

The committee is tasked with assessing the shortage of seats in these colleges and universities, as well as examining the demand-supply gap in medical education.

This will include a re-evaluation of the approval process for private medical colleges and consideration of admissions in unapproved foreign medical institutions.

Additionally, the committee will formulate an action plan to enhance the overall quality of medical education.

It will propose policies regarding admissions in foreign medical colleges and review the number of Pakistani students pursuing medical education abroad.

The committee has been instructed to deliver a comprehensive report within 10 days, detailing the current state of medical education in Pakistan and providing actionable recommendations.

The committee’s membership is composed of a diverse group of officials and experts, including:

  • Economic Affairs Minister Ahad Cheema
  • Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar
  • PM’s Coordinator on Health Dr. Mukhtar
  • PPP leader Dr. Nafisa Shah
  • Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Major General (retd) Dr. Azhar Kiyani
  • Special Secretary for Foreign Affairs

  • University of Health Sciences, Lahore Vice Chancellor Prof. Ahsan Waheed
  • Aga Khan Medical University, Karachi Dean Dr. Adil Hussain
