ISLAMABAD: The University of Karachi is gearing up for a significant event as it prepares to convene a syndicate meeting this Saturday.
This follows a recommendation from Sindh Governor Kamran Khan Tessori to grant an honorary Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree to the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Ebrahim Raisi, during his upcoming visit to Pakistan.
The suggestion to confer this honorary PhD upon President Raisi originated from Sindh Governor Tessori and the Chancellor of Public Universities of Sindh. The University of Karachi has formally received a letter from the Sindh governor outlining this recommendation.
Prior to this, the Sindh governor held discussions with the vice chancellor of Karachi University regarding this proposal.
Following the official letter’s reception, the university promptly arranged an emergency session of its syndicate to deliberate on the matter of granting the honorary PhD to President Raisi.
President Ebrahim Raisi’s visit to Karachi is scheduled in conjunction with his broader trip to Pakistan on April 23. A special convocation ceremony is expected to take place at the Governor House Sindh on the same day.
Professor Dr. Khalid Mahmood Iraqi, Vice Chancellor of the University of Karachi, confirmed the scheduled emergency syndicate meeting for Saturday at 3 pm. The meeting’s agenda will solely focus on the proposed honorary degree, and pending syndicate approval, President Raisi will be presented with the honorary PhD certificate.
The upcoming visit by Iranian President Raisi carries significant importance, as he will be the first head of state to visit Pakistan following the formation of the new government in the country. This visit is particularly noteworthy given its proximity to Iran’s recent direct attack on Israel.
