Detection of Polio Virus in Four Environmental Samples Raises Alarm

Polio Virus

ISLAMABAD: The National Institute of Health (NIH) announced on Wednesday the detection of four new environmental samples testing positive for wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1), bringing the tally of positive samples recorded this year to 112.

The newly identified samples were collected from Karachi and Pishin district in Balochistan province. Significantly, they were found to be genetically linked to the imported YB3A cluster of WPV1.

This particular cluster has been attributed to all positive samples and two human cases reported in Pakistan so far this year, as reported by private news channels.

The NIH underscored the gravity of the situation, emphasizing that the presence of the polio virus poses a substantial risk to children under the age of five, who are susceptible to lifelong physical disabilities if infected.

Amidst the alarming rise in positive samples, the health ministry has issued a stern advisory urging parents to ensure their children receive the polio vaccine during every immunization campaign. This proactive measure is deemed crucial in the ongoing battle against the disease.

To combat the spread of polio, the NIH has initiated an integrated strategy in high-risk areas.

Concurrently, the government has reaffirmed its steadfast commitment to eradicating polio from the nation, recognizing the imperative of collective efforts in achieving this goal.

The escalating number of positive samples underscores the urgency of intensifying vaccination efforts and implementing stringent preventive measures.

With children’s health at stake, concerted action is imperative to curb the spread of polio and safeguard the well-being of future generations.
