Daily Strawberry Consumption May Lower Cardiovascular Disease Risk, Study Finds

The risk of cardiovascular diseases can be significantly reduced by consuming strawberries daily, according to a recent study presented at Nutrition 2024, the annual meeting of the American Society for Nutrition held in Chicago on June 30. The study, led by Dr. Lasantha Krishan Hirimuthugoda, a postdoctoral research associate at the Illinois Institute of Technology, highlights the heart health benefits of this popular fruit.

Strawberries, often celebrated for their taste, are also noted for their potential cardiovascular benefits. The study focused on the impact of strawberry consumption on endothelial function and glucose control, particularly investigating the relationship between flow-mediated dilation (FMD) responses and cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk.

The research included 36 women and 32 men, aged 20 to 62 years, with a body mass index (BMI) of 29.8±4.8 kg/m². Participants consumed strawberries daily for four weeks, and the study assessed the effects on FMD and the overall risk of CVD. Results showed that daily strawberry intake significantly improved FMD percentage compared to a control group, indicating a dose-response relationship. However, preliminary analyses of continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) data suggested no significant differences between interventions from baseline.

Co-author Britt Burton-Freeman, PhD, a professor at the Illinois Institute of Technology, emphasized the importance of fruit in the diet, noting, “A diet low in fruit is among the top three risk factors for cardiovascular disease and diabetes.” He added that incorporating just one cup of strawberries a day could offer notable benefits for cardiovascular health.

Additionally, a serving of eight strawberries (one cup) fulfills the daily recommended intake of vitamin C and provides a range of other nutrients and beneficial bioactive compounds. The study reinforces the potential of strawberries to contribute positively to heart health and overall well-being.
