US House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries has officially launched his campaign to become the next Speaker of the House of Representatives following the Democrats’ sweeping victory in the 2026 midterm elections.
Jeffries could make history as the first Black politician to hold the powerful position. He announced his candidacy on Wednesday, pledging to prioritise economic affordability and strengthen congressional oversight.
Meanwhile, Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson has confirmed that he will step aside from his party’s leadership following the Republicans’ heavy electoral defeat.
Johnson informed his staff of the decision on Wednesday, a day after Democrats secured control of both congressional chambers in a major setback for President Donald Trump’s administration.
The Louisiana Republican has served as House Speaker since October 2023. However, his decision not to pursue minority leadership will trigger a contest between House Majority Leader Steve Scalise and Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan.
Both lawmakers are prominent conservatives and supporters of Trump. Republicans are expected to select their new leader next Tuesday.
Johnson will retain his congressional seat and will not immediately resign from the speakership. Meanwhile, Jeffries is widely expected to secure the position when the new Congress convenes on January 3, 2027.
His expected election would represent a historic milestone in American politics and mark a significant shift in congressional leadership.
