Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has approved an interest-free Hajj savings scheme to help Pakistanis manage the rising expenses of performing the annual pilgrimage. The initiative will allow prospective pilgrims to save money gradually instead of arranging the entire amount at once.
The Ministry of Finance and National Savings jointly developed the proposed plan, which will use a digital system to facilitate monthly contributions. Consequently, participants will have an opportunity to prepare financially for Hajj according to their individual circumstances.
How Will the Interest-Free Hajj Savings Scheme Work?
Under the proposed Hajj Savings Plan, participants will deposit a specific amount each month through a digital savings system. They will also be able to select a savings period that suits their financial situation.
This approach aims to make pilgrimage planning more manageable, particularly for people who cannot afford to pay the full Hajj expenses immediately. By saving gradually, prospective pilgrims can organise their finances well in advance.
Moreover, the scheme will offer flexibility for participants who need to manage their savings differently. The proposed arrangements will allow them to transfer their savings accounts or related facilities to other family members.
Participants Can Withdraw Savings Without Deductions
Another key feature of the proposed scheme concerns access to deposited funds. Participants will be able to withdraw their savings at any stage without facing deductions.
This provision is intended to give account holders greater flexibility when their financial circumstances change. However, the detailed procedures governing these facilities will become clearer once the government finalises the scheme’s regulations.
The digital payment system will also support regular contributions, making it easier for participants to maintain their savings over time. Therefore, the initiative seeks to provide an organised way to prepare for Hajj expenses through manageable monthly deposits.
Government Considers Extending Scheme to Umrah
Officials are also considering whether to extend the savings model to Umrah and other religious pilgrimages. However, this possibility remains under consideration and has not been confirmed as part of the scheme’s current arrangements.
If the government proceeds with the proposed expansion, the model could offer another way for people to plan their religious travel expenses. For now, the initiative primarily focuses on helping prospective Hajj pilgrims build their savings in advance.
Hajj Savings Plan Rules Expected Within Two Months
The government is expected to finalise the detailed procedures and regulations for the Hajj Savings Plan within the next two months. These rules will clarify how the scheme will operate and how interested individuals can participate.
Furthermore, authorities are expected to provide additional information about the formal launch date and enrolment process after completing the regulatory framework.
Until officials announce these details, prospective pilgrims will need to wait for further guidance on registration and participation. The scheme’s implementation will depend on the completion of its rules and procedures.
