Public Transport Suspended Across Multiple Districts
GUJRANWALA/ GUJRAT โ A blockade along the GT Road in Gujranwala and Gujrat disrupted public and goods transport heading toward Islamabad on Monday due to VVIP movement in the federal capital. Consequently, long queues of vehicles formed as authorities enforced travel restrictions across key routes.
However, the restriction did not apply to private cars and jeeps, which continued their journeys without interruption. Meanwhile, hundreds of goods carriers, including container trucks, remained stranded along highways, creating significant congestion along major stretches of road.
Authorities had already suspended bus, coaster, and van services from several districts, including Gujranwala, Wazirabad, Sialkot, Gujrat, Mandi Bahauddin, and Jhelum, beginning Sunday night. As a result, transport operators parked most of their fleets at bus stands and terminals, awaiting clearance to resume operations.
Travelers Seek Alternative Routes as Barricades Multiply
Meanwhile, some intercity buses and vans traveling from Lahore toward Islamabad and Rawalpindi offloaded passengers in Gujranwala late Sunday. Subsequently, stranded travelers arranged onward journeys using hired cars and rickshaws on shared fares to reach nearby destinations.
At the same time, authorities tightened security along GT Road. Teams from the National Highways and Motorway Police, Punjab Traffic Police, and local administration installed barricades at multiple points, spaced 10 to 20 kilometers apart. Consequently, movement remained heavily restricted across the corridor.
Overall, the coordinated enforcement measures led to widespread disruption in regional transport while ensuring security protocols during VVIP movement remained in place.
