The government on Saturday rejected foreign media reports about PTI founder Imran Khan’s prison conditions and medical treatment, calling the claims misleading.
The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MoIB) said official prison records contradicted allegations that authorities had isolated Khan or denied him adequate medical care. It also stressed that courts of competent jurisdiction convicted Khan.
The ministry said Khan receives visits, telephone calls, reading material, television access, home-cooked food and exercise facilities. It added that he stays in an exclusive seven-cell compound with sleeping, sanitation and exercise arrangements.
Government Cites Prison Records And Medical Care
According to the ministry, prison records show around 198 interview sessions involving more than 900 visitor entries. These visits included Khan’s sisters, family members, lawyers, doctors and political representatives.
The ministry also said Khan received weekly meetings with his wife, while officials recorded meetings with his sisters on August 18, 19 and 25. In addition, records showed telephone, landline and WhatsApp communication with family members in Pakistan and abroad.
Meanwhile, the government rejected claims that Khan lacked medical treatment. It said specialist teams and medical boards conducted around 30 examinations involving PIMS, Shifa International, Shaukat Khanum and other hospitals.
Ministry Defends Treatment And Communication Rules
The ministry said doctors treated Khan for a retinal condition with five anti-VEGF injections, retinal imaging, medication and follow-up examinations. It added that assessments in July and on August 21 described him as stable and oriented.
The government also cited Khan’s sister, Dr Uzma Niazi, who reportedly described him as “100 percent fit.” It said authorities implemented Supreme Court directions regarding his medical examination and treatment.
Finally, the ministry urged foreign media to distinguish verified custodial and medical records from politically contested allegations.
