The government has increased the petrol price by Rs 4.61 per litre while reducing the high-speed diesel (HSD) rate by Rs 1.96 per litre. Following the latest revision, petrol will cost Rs 393.75 per litre, while HSD will be available at Rs 422.08.
The Petroleum Division issued a notification stating that the new prices will take effect from Tuesday, September 22. Meanwhile, the government continues to collect Rs 114 per litre in taxes and duties on petrol and Rs 100 per litre on diesel.
Petrol Price Climbs Despite Diesel Reduction
The latest increase takes the petrol price higher after it reached a peak of Rs 458.41 per litre on April 3. Its price had started rising from Rs 266 during the first week of March amid increased international fuel prices.
Similarly, HSD has declined from its April peak of Rs 520.35 per litre. The diesel price had climbed from Rs 281 per litre after the US-Iran war began on February 28.
Govt Introduces Fuel Conservation Measures
The government has also revived several austerity measures in response to higher fuel prices. These measures include requiring markets to close by 9pm and reducing fuel allocations for official vehicles by 50 percent for three months.
The latest fuel price adjustment will affect motorists, transport operators and businesses across the country. Authorities are expected to continue monitoring international oil prices before future revisions.
