National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq led a government delegation to meet JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman in Islamabad amid a continuing political deadlock.
The delegation included Prime Minister’s Adviser on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Tariq Fazal Chaudhry. The meeting came as efforts to resolve differences between the government and PTI remained stalled.
Government Briefs Fazlur Rehman on Political Situation
According to sources, the government delegation briefed Fazlur Rehman on the latest political developments. The delegation maintained that the government was not responsible for the deadlock with PTI. It also linked the breakdown to disagreements over the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government’s cooperation on terrorism-related matters.
However, Fazlur Rehman stressed the importance of negotiations. He urged all sides to choose dialogue in the national interest.
Ayaz Sadiq Backs Continued Dialogue
Ayaz Sadiq said negotiations between the government and opposition had made progress before the latest deadlock. He described the situation as unfortunate and said he had made every effort to facilitate the talks. He also pledged to continue working for a political solution.
The speaker said he remained in contact with opposition leaders through telephone calls and other channels. He also expressed hope that a political path forward would emerge.
Speaker Highlights Longstanding Ties With Fazlur Rehman
After the meeting, Sadiq said it was his first meeting with Fazlur Rehman in around one and a half months.
He said he had also visited the JUI-F chief to congratulate him on performing Umrah. Sadiq described Fazlur Rehman as a brother and rejected suggestions that the government had forgotten him.
“Maulana Fazal ur Rehman is like a brother to us,” he said.
Sadiq added that his relationship with Fazlur Rehman extended beyond politics. He also noted his longstanding connections with the JUI-F chief’s family.
Political Contacts Continue Amid PTI March
The meeting followed a previous opposition gathering at Fazlur Rehman’s residence. Opposition leaders had discussed the political situation and the possibility of a broader joint strategy.
Meanwhile, the PTI has continued its long march towards Islamabad after talks with the government failed to produce an agreement. PTI Chairman Gohar Ali Khan has also called for unconditional negotiations to continue.
The latest meeting suggests that political contacts remain active despite the breakdown in formal talks. Government officials have also reiterated that their doors remain open for negotiations.
