Media watchdog Freedom Network has raised concerns about data privacy following recent agreements between Google and the Pakistani government. While welcoming Google’s decision to open an office in Pakistan, the organisation urged both parties to disclose details of their partnership.
In an open letter, Freedom Network questioned whether the agreements contain adequate safeguards to protect citizens from surveillance, censorship, or unrestricted access to personal information. The watchdog stressed that transparency remains essential for building public trust in Pakistan’s growing digital economy.
Google Deal Prompts Calls for Public Disclosure
Freedom Network asked Google and the government to publish all memoranda of understanding, contracts, and related agreements. Furthermore, it questioned whether any confidential provisions exist and sought clarification about the legal basis for keeping such details undisclosed.
The watchdog also asked whether the agreements include any hidden commitments involving access to user data, metadata, online content, or government databases. It sought assurances that authorities would only obtain user information through valid legal procedures and proper judicial oversight.
Freedom Network further urged Google to reject requests that are vague, overly broad, or inconsistent with fundamental rights. According to the organisation, clear safeguards are necessary to prevent misuse of personal information.
Watchdog Seeks Stronger Protection for User Data
The media watchdog specifically highlighted privacy concerns about journalists’ Gmail accounts, Google Drive files, photos, YouTube channels, and search-related information. It asked whether protections exist to prevent government access to data that could reveal confidential sources.
Additionally, Freedom Network called on Google to ensure that content removal requests follow transparent legal standards. It also asked where Pakistani users’ data would be stored and whether independent audits would verify compliance with privacy and human-rights safeguards.
The organisation emphasized that no informal or undocumented data-sharing arrangements should exist between Google and the Pakistani government.
