The All-Pakistan Goods Transporters Association has announced a nationwide wheel-jam strike from October 10 if the government fails to accept its demands.
The decision was taken during a meeting of the association in Lahore. The meeting was chaired by President Nabil Mahmood Tariq. Senior Vice President Haji Irfan Sultan, Vice President Mumtaz Ali Khan, Mirza Arshad Iqbal and other officials also attended.
Transporters said they had repeatedly sought relief under their Charter of Demand. They called for the government to fulfill commitments made during their previous strike.
A major demand is the immediate release of containers seized during protests and sit-ins. The association also demanded financial compensation for transporters affected by those incidents.
According to the association, affected transporters should receive compensation of Rs20,000 and Rs35,000, depending on the circumstances.
Transporters also raised concerns over enforcement measures involving sales tax invoices. They demanded an end to the stopping and fining of vehicles over sales tax documentation.
The association further called for a reduction in diesel prices, citing the impact of fuel costs on the transport sector.
The transporters said both federal and provincial governments must take practical steps to address their concerns and provide the relief previously promised.
The association warned that failure to meet the demands would result in a complete suspension of goods transport operations from October 10.
A nationwide wheel-jam strike could affect the movement of commercial goods and supply chains across Pakistan if transport operations are suspended.
The association has therefore called on the authorities to address the outstanding demands before the announced strike date.
