The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a flood alert for eight districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa following the risk of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs).
According to the authority, glacier melting and ongoing heavy rainfall have increased the possibility of flooding in several vulnerable areas.
As water levels continue to rise, officials have urged local administrations to remain alert and strengthen emergency preparedness.
Eight Districts Face Increased Flood Risk
The PDMA identified Chitral, Upper Dir, Lower Dir, Swat, Upper Kohistan, Lower Kohistan, Mansehra, and one additional vulnerable district as areas facing an elevated flood risk.
The authority warned that glacier melting, combined with heavy rainfall, could significantly increase water flow in rivers, streams, and seasonal nullahs.
Consequently, communities living near these waterways may face a greater threat if water levels continue to rise.
Officials have advised district administrations to closely monitor changing conditions throughout the affected regions.
Authorities Ordered to Strengthen Monitoring
Following the alert, the PDMA directed all concerned deputy commissioners to maintain continuous surveillance of vulnerable locations.
The authority also instructed district administrations to establish an effective early warning system to respond quickly to any emergency.
These measures are intended to improve coordination and ensure timely action if flood conditions worsen.
Meanwhile, officials have been asked to remain in close contact with relevant emergency departments.
Rescue Teams and Equipment to Remain on Standby
The PDMA has instructed authorities to ensure the availability of rescue personnel and emergency equipment in Kohistan, Mansehra, and Swat.
In addition, preparations for possible evacuations must be completed in Chitral, Upper Dir, Swat, Kohistan, and Mansehra.
The advance planning aims to reduce response time if flooding threatens populated areas.
Authorities are expected to continue monitoring weather conditions and glacier activity while remaining prepared for any emergency developments.
