Friedrich Merz has said his relationship with Donald Trump remains positive. However, tensions have surfaced over the Iran conflict.
Speaking to reporters, Merz acknowledged differences. Yet, he stressed that personal ties between both leaders remain intact.
โFrom my perspective, my personal relationship with the US President remains good. I simply had doubts from the start about what was begun with the war in Iran. That is why I have made that clear,โ he said.
This statement reflects a careful balance. While disagreements exist, diplomatic engagement continues.
Growing Divide Between US and European Allies
The disagreement highlights broader differences between Washington and its European NATO partners. These divisions extend beyond Iran.
They also include policy differences on the Ukraine conflict and regional security strategies.
As a result, the alliance faces increasing pressure. Still, both sides continue to communicate.
Economic Concerns Take Center Stage
Merz raised serious concerns about the economic fallout. He pointed to disruptions caused by instability in the Middle East.
โIn Germany and Europe, we are suffering from the consequences, such as the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. This has a direct impact on our energy supply and a huge impact on our economic performance,โ said Merz.
This warning highlights Europeโs vulnerability. Energy supply disruptions have created significant challenges for the region.Trump Responds With Sharp Criticism
Earlier, Trump publicly criticised Merz over his stance. He accused the German leader of misunderstanding the issue.
In a social media post, Trump claimed that Merz thought it was โOKโ for Iran to have a nuclear weapon. He added that the chancellor โdidnโt know what he was talking about.โ
However, Merz has clearly stated his position. He insists that Iran must not acquire nuclear weapons.
Tensions Escalate Over Diplomatic Approach
The disagreement intensified after Merz criticised US diplomacy. He said Iranโs leadership was โhumiliatingโ the United States.
He referred to peace talks involving US officials travelling to Pakistan. According to him, those efforts ended without results.
Merz also questioned Washingtonโs strategy. He said he did not see a clear exit plan from the conflict.
Strait of Hormuz Crisis Adds Pressure
The situation has worsened due to disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz. The vital route has remained largely closed since early March.
This has triggered market instability and energy supply disruptions. Consequently, global economic concerns have grown.
Trump has criticised NATO allies for limited naval involvement. He urged them to help secure the route.
Ceasefire Holds, But Conflict Remains Unresolved
Although a ceasefire exists in the US-Israel conflict with Iran, tensions persist. Both sides remain locked in a deadlock.
Efforts to reach a formal agreement have not succeeded yet. Therefore, uncertainty continues to shape global dynamics.
Diplomatic Ties Tested but Intact
Despite sharp exchanges, Merz maintains that relations remain stable. Communication between Berlin and Washington continues.
However, differences over strategy and policy remain significant. These divisions could shape future transatlantic relations.
For now, both leaders appear willing to manage tensions. Yet, the Iran conflict continues to test the strength of their partnership.
