The 2026 US midterm elections have brought a new generation of political leaders into Congress. Two candidates in their twenties, Republican Michael Alfonso and Democrat Melat Kiros, have secured historic victories. Their wins mark significant milestones for Generation Z representation in American politics.
Michael Alfonso Becomes Youngest House Member
Republican Michael Alfonso, 26, defeated Democrat Fred Clark in Wisconsin’s 7th Congressional District. His victory makes him the youngest member of the US House of Representatives. He also becomes the first person born in the 2000s to serve in Congress.
Alfonso is a political newcomer and the son-in-law of Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy. During his campaign, he supported President Donald Trump and promoted an “America First” platform.
His campaign focused on conservative priorities, including education, healthcare and vocational training.
Melat Kiros Makes History for Gen Z Women
Democrat Melat Kiros, 29, won Colorado’s 1st Congressional District. She becomes the first Gen Z woman elected to Congress.
The Ethiopian-born lawyer secured the seat after defeating longtime Democratic incumbent Diana DeGette in the party primary.
Kiros has gained attention for her criticism of Israel’s military actions in Gaza. She has called for an arms embargo on Israel and an end to US military support.
Her policy positions also include Medicare for All and universal childcare.
Gen Z Representation Expands in Congress
Alfonso and Kiros join Florida Democrat Maxwell Frost, 29, who became the first Gen Z member of Congress after his 2022 election.
Frost secured another term in 2026 without facing an opponent on the ballot.
Meanwhile, Texas Democrat James Talarico, 37, became the youngest member of the US Senate.
These victories highlight the growing presence of younger politicians in American national politics. They also bring different generational perspectives into debates over healthcare, education, foreign policy and the country’s future.
